Tales of the Gun - The AK-47 - The AK-47 is a 7.62mm combat rifle, developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov. It was officially accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces in 1949. It is also used by the majority of the member states of the former Warsaw Pact. The AK-47 was also used as a basis for the development of many other types of individual and crew-served firearms.
It was one of the first true assault rifles and, due to its durability, low production cost and ease of use, remains the most widely used assault rifle in the world - so much so that more AK-type rifles have been produced than all other combat rifles combined.

I actually get a couple of inquires every month, and lots of traffic from people Googling about the Marine Bravo-51, which was used to kill NCIS Special Agent Caitlin "Kate" Todd (portrayed by Sasha Alexander) at the end of season 2 (continuing into the season 3 premier episodes) of the popular CBS drama NCIS.
The genuine Bravo-51 is a Remington M700 tactical bolt-action rifle, expertly customized by Tactical Operations Inc. (Tac-Ops), in California. It's one of a series of duty-specific rifles (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.) by Tac-Ops, popular among military, police, Coast Guard, hunters, survivalists, and more.
The Bravo-51 is most-often chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO (.308 Winchester), with a reasonably flat trajectory for engaging within 300 ~ 700 meters (in my opinion), and a short case designed for reliable feeding in a short action. .300 Winchester Magnum variants are also available. They're outfitted with match grade heavy barrels (457mm, 508mm, 559mm, or 610mm) and threaded for a suppressor, in a fiberglass McHale stock with aluminum pillars, Harris bipod, scope mounts / Picatinny rail, and sling.
Most just refer to it as Bravo-51, if anything at all. From the Marine friends I've asked, they hadn't ever seen one deployed, but apparently Sniper Platoons were trained in their use. It seemed to be more associated with the Army, within which I (regrettably) haven't yet any friends to ask. NCIS writers seem to have employed a little artistic license, and tenuously basing the "Kate" mythology on a US Army National Guard sharpshooter who runs the Sniper Central webpage. When he served, he was issued an Army M24 SWS, he had named Kate (pic) - a common tradition. After serving, he ordered himself a Spec-Ops Bravo-51, which he dubbed Kate II - presumably to honor his original M24, Kate, with which his Bravo-51 shares many similarities. Besides this, I'm not aware of any other connections to the Bravo-51 rifle, and the nickname Kate.
NCIS - Season 2 Finale / Season 3 Premier - Ari Kills Kate / Gibbs & Ziva Kill Ari
The NCIS Season 2 finale, and two-part Season 3 premier episodes make big changes in the series. NCIS agent Kate Todd is killed by triple-agent Ari Haswari, Jenny Shepherd is appointed the new NCIS director, and Mossad officer Ziva David is introduced to the NCIS team while Gibbs hunts Ari.
NCIS - Season 2, Episode 23 - Season Finale - "Twilight" - While the team investigate a double murder out on the high-way, Kate pushes Tony down and he notices a bomb on the car, saving Kate and McGee. The FBI notifies the team that Ari Haswari has returned to the US and may be on a personal vendetta to assassinate Gibbs. Gibbs, Tony and Kate search for Ari, Kate takes a bullet in the chest for Gibbs life. She reveals that she is wearing a bullet proof vest but unannounced, Ari Haswari kills Kate with a bullet to the head, using a Bravo 51 sniper rifle, and the same ammunition Gibbs used when he was in the Marine Corps. Gibbs and Dinozzo are left shocked and searching for the killer, and Gibbs whispers "Ari" before the end of the episode.
NCIS - Season 3, Episode 1 - Season Premier Pt. 1 - "Kill Ari" - As the team attempts to deal with Kate's death, Gibbs clashes with the new NCIS director, who believes that Ari Haswari was not the one responsible for firing the bullet that killed Agent Todd. Ziva David, Ari's Mossad control officer, sides with the director, and causes problems when she arrives in the NCIS office. However, Ziva's motives for defending Ari become murky, when she communicates with him and doesn't tell anyone in the NCIS office. Ari kidnaps Ducky to divert the team's attention away from Ziva.
NCIS - Season 3, Episode 2 - Season Premier Pt. 2 - "Kill Ari" - Gibbs' determination to kill Ari increases after he mounts attacks against various members of the team in his sadistic game with Gibbs. Ari's control officer, Ziva David, begins to doubt Ari's innocence and agrees with Gibbs' plan to present Ari with the opportunity to kill him. It is only after the encounter between the three of them, that Gibbs discovers why Ziva was so quick to defend the murderer. The team bids a sad farewell to Kate as she is laid to rest with civilian honors. NCIS Director Morrow approved Gibbs' request that Kate be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
